Interlingual Interactions Elicit Performance Mismatches Not “Compromise” Categories in Early Bilinguals: Evidence from Meta-Analysis and Coronal Stops

چکیده
Previous studies attest that some early bilinguals produce the sounds of their languages in a manner is characterized as “compromise” with regard to monolingual speakers. The present study uses meta-analytic techniques and coronal stop data from order assess this claim. goal was evaluate cumulative evidence for voice-onset time (VOT) speech by providing comprehensive assessment literature presenting an acoustic analysis stops Spanish–English bilinguals. were coded linguistic methodological features, well effect sizes, then analyzed using cross-classified Bayesian meta-analysis. pooled VOT negligible (? = ?0.13). showed often produced Spanish English targets mismatched features other language. These performance mismatches presumably occurred result interlingual interactions elicited experimental task. Taken together, results suggest do not have VOT, though involves dynamic phonetic can surface during production.

Articulatory Coordination in Coronal Stops:
Articulatory data obtained from X-ray films were analyzed to investigate articulatory coordination in Swedish vowels and dental and retroflex stops. Several quantitative frameworks for predicting observed tongue contours were evaluated. Performance was assessed on a set of articulations traced at the V1:C boundary in V1:CV2 sequences. The best model, as determined by an rms-criterion, had 3 par...

Abstract Sebastián-Gallés et al. [The influence of initial exposure on lexical representation: Comparing early and simultaneous bilinguals. Journal of Memory and Language, 52, 240-255, 2005] contrasted highly proficient early Spanish-Catalan and Catalan-Spanish bilinguals, using Catalan materials in a lexical decision task (LDT). They constructed two types of experimental pseudowords, substitut...
متن کاملPerceptual evidence of modern Greek voiced stops as phonological categories
The phonological status of voiced stops in Modern Greek (MG) remains unclear. Research shows that listeners typically discriminate native phonological contrasts without difficulty. We report MG listeners show excellent discrimination of MG bilabial [p]-[b] and coronal [t]-[d] stop voicing contrasts, significantly better than their discrimination of nonnative Australian English (AE) [p]-[p] and ...
متن کاملStops and Phrasing in Korean and English Monolinguals and Bilinguals
The theoretical status of early bilinguals is an area of some controversy. This study investigates subphonemic variation in Korean and English by monolinguals, and bilinguals who were born in the US (simultaneous), moved to the US as young children (early), or moved to the US during late adolescence (late). Speakers were recorded producing word-initial stops in a phrase-medial context. Measurem...
متن کاملAcoustics of Spanish and English coronal stops
This study explores the acoustic correlates that distinguish coronal stops (/t/, /d/) between English and Spanish. English and Spanish coronal stops are hypothesized to differ in terms of voice-onset time and place of articulation. We are particularly concerned with capturing the place of articulation difference with acoustic data, as the voice-onset time difference is well known. Specifically,...
